In the harbour of La Boca, melted and came together the idiosyncrasy of a wide range of characters such as varied European immigrants, country-side folks, football-mad fans, bohemians, artists of several kinds, and why not?, peculiar underworld spots, unique testimonial of the old times, when the handsome “criollo” truly defended his manliness involved by the very particular combination of flavour, colour and scent of hungry “la Boca”; hungry for life, eager for love, epicentre where the eclectic melting pot of its inhabitants gave birth, from the deepest soul, to the melodies of a neighbourhood identity that became, later on, symbol of a national identity: Tango. “Quinteto Negro La Boca” was born as a band in the neighbourhood of “la Boca” in 2008. It is their members intention to recuperate the cultural heritage of the neighbourhood through the music of tango, rescuing authors such Pedro Laurenz and Juan de Dios Filiberto. Not in vain was “la Boca”, one of the most important sites in the involving and development of tango throughout the times. It was in the middle of the fifties when this tremendously creative machinery got unfortunately stuck. It is primal goal for the Quinteto, refloating those roots enriched by new and very interesting esthetical ingredients. We assume as fundamental our debt to the deepest roots yet mixed with recent social factors: foreign south-American immigrants and newcomers from different area along the country, which nowadays give shape: La República de la Boca. STYLE AND ORCHESTATION We can definitively say we play in a milonga style with a clear Decarean link. We roam among accompaniment models and rhythmical unfoldings by the great composer Osvaldo Pugliese and some Troilean style variations. The base of our repertoire is integrating valses and tangos, milongas and chacareras arranged by the quinteto, as well our own compositions.
This line-up is not so common in a quinteto and due to that we have acquired our own personality. The two bandoneon bring along a strong armonical sonority that become delicious and gains intimacy with the acoustic “Roberto Grela´s touch” of the guitar, and sharply contrasts with the “clusters” and “marcattos” of the piano and the double-bass. That creates a powerful atmosphere of magic and delights both suitable for small café gigs and more crowded outdoor concerts.
